MACHiNENOiSY: Teachers Bios Vancouver, Canada based Contact Dance teachers, Delia Brett and Daelik, co-directors of MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society, each draw on over 20 years of experience practicing the form. They teach contact dance to people of all ages, abilities, genders, and nationalities. They have taught across Canada, throughout the United States, Wales, Austria, France, Greece, and Germany, as well as locally for, EDAM Dance, Studio 58, The Bachelor of Performing Arts Program and Modus Operandi: Vancouver’s professional dance training program.
Class Description: Contact Dance works with simple movement principles like balance, counter balance, the force of gravity and the physics of momentum in relation to another body. Contact improvisation is a dance of paradoxical continuity, a flow from one surprising moment to the next. Met with awareness and a developed sense of interpersonal trust, each dance becomes a unique experience of singular significance. To Daelik and Delia, every class is a laboratory, which poses a question to be researched through the play of contact dance and every person, no matter what their experience, is an artist in their own right. It has been their experience that contact dance improvisation can provide the all tools needed for developing powerful, versatile and successful contemporary dance artists. Their classes are designed to shed the weight of habit and hesitancy in dance and create a body engaged and ready, alight with our attention. By focusing each class on specific movement challenges we begin to increase our perceptive capacity and allow the imaginative world of dance to emerge.
Dancing from the Bones - Our bones form the foundation for support in a contact dance. From the earth through the bones we support. Our bones provide architectural stability. By discovering balance, off balance, stability, resistance and resilience in our bones we can develop a soft and integrated skeletal structure for our partners in a contact dance.
The Evolution of Flight (Workshop) - We really can fly. Timing, ease, levity and buoyancy are our wings. With simple guidance, patience, and skeletal security our contact dance can grow up - from the earth to the sky.
Triple Threat (Workshop) - When we dance in trio the potential for invention and freedom is greater than in a contact duet. Yet sometimes dancing in trio can create disorientation and confusion. Over the course of the workshop we will provide participants with the skills and the confidence they need to increase their perceptive capacity in a trio and experience their dancing unfettered of fear.
